American Distilling Institute Expo Review<\/h1>\n

The distilling industry was dominated early April by 2014 Annual American Distilling Institute\u00a0Expo in Washington State as some of the biggest names in the industry flooded Seattle for a long\u00a0weekend of tastings, lectures, examples in new and inventive distilling techniques and the chance\u00a0to share the experience of participating in one of the most affluent events of the year.<\/p>\n

Now in its tenth year, the Expo has become a recognized showcase in the distilling business,\u00a0pulling in over one hundred reputable vendors of custom glass bottles and others and playing host to more than a dozen interactive\u00a0conferences, coming a long way from its humble beginnings back in 2004. The origins of the\u00a0Expo as well as its continual climbing success belongs to Mr. Bill Owens, founder and president\u00a0of the American Distilling Institute. \u00a0\u201cI shocked myself,\u201d Owens laughed cheerfully when asked about what he thought of this\u00a0year\u2019s turn out. \u201cOver a thousand people were there. Ten years ago when we held the first\u00a0Expo, only 68 people showed up. Now we have 109 vendors and interactive workshops that last\u00a0throughout the weekend, giving people the chance to experience what it\u2019s like inside distillers\u00a0and learn from different experts in different fields.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not one to sand alone in the spotlight, Owens made sure to mention Seattle, contributing the\u00a0city\u2019s support for much of the Expo\u2019s prosperity over the years, and made note of the bus tours\u00a0and city guides on hand throughout the weekend who made sure to highlight the city in gratitude\u00a0for all its assistance. \u00a0In recognition of the newly tapped potential, the annual Expo holds a diverse judging each year, holding categories in select groups like moonshine, gin, whiskey, brandy and rum. Just\u00a0a few of the winners in previous years have gone on to make headway in the distilling world,\u00a0including 2013 winners Valentine Distilling Co. of Liberator Gin and Balcones Distilling of\u00a0Texas Rum.<\/p>\n

Optimism for the future of craft distilling can be mirrored the progress and outpouring of\u00a0achievement and success in Annual American Distilling Institute Expo. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen a 30%\u00a0increase every year for the last five years,\u201d Owens said. \u201cThis surge reflects the growth of the\u00a0Distilling Industry as it branches out from the small circles of individuals dedicated to perfecting\u00a0their artisan craft and into the eye of the mainstream public.\u201d When asked what he thought might\u00a0be behind the gradual rise in interest, Owens replied, \u201cWe\u2019re doing what the big guys don\u2019t,\u201d he\u00a0said, referring to larger cooperate distilling companies. \u201cWe\u2019re carving a new piece of the pie,\u00a0working on things like absinthe and gin, making a niche that hasn\u2019t been done before.\u201d<\/p>\n\"Facebook\"<\/a>\"twitter\"<\/a>\"reddit\"<\/a>\"pinterest\"<\/a>\"linkedin\"<\/a>\"mail\"<\/a>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
